The warm interior of an independent bookstore in a historic brick building with tall bookshelves, a display table of new releases, brass reading lamps, and a leather reading chair in late-afternoon light

This month's Small Business Spotlight features The Twig Book Shop, San Antonio's oldest independent bookstore, in the Pearl district on the Museum Reach of the San Antonio River Walk. The shop has sold new books for adults and children since 1972 under two families of owners, and it is still going strong. Every fact below was checked against the named sources on October 16, 2026, and each source is linked with its date.

How this spotlight is built

I research each month's featured business live and only publish what I can confirm from the business's own pages or a named local source, with the source and its date linked on every item. If I cannot verify a date, price, or detail, it does not make the profile. This month's business is The Twig Book Shop at the Pearl in San Antonio, Bexar County.

What they offer

The Twig Book Shop is a full-scale independent bookstore. It carries newly released titles for adults and children, award-winning classics, audio and e-books, and one of the deeper collections of Texana you will find in the city: books on Texas history, places, and people. It also stocks gifts such as t-shirts, mugs, bookmarks, journals, greeting cards, and buttons. Beyond the shelves, the shop runs a weekly story time for children on Friday mornings, hosts author events and signings, works with area schools on book fairs, and supplies books for book clubs. Per the store's website, it is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

How long they have been around

The Twig began in 1972 as a branch of Harris Smithson's L&M College Bookstore, in the Quadrangle on Broadway north of Loop 410, and it grew into its own store over the years. The name comes from a line by Alexander Pope that the shop still points to today: "'Tis education forms the common mind; just as the twig is bent the tree's inclined." In 1978 Smithson acquired the Higgins Bookstore on Broadway in Alamo Heights, and the shop operated from several Broadway-area locations over the decades before moving to the Pearl in 2009. That puts the store past its 50th year in business, and local coverage identifies it as San Antonio's oldest independent bookstore.

What makes them special

Three things stand out. First, staying power: most independent bookstores never see a 50th birthday, and The Twig has made it past that mark under founder Harris Smithson, then owner John Douglas, and now Frannie Douglas, who has owned the shop since 2014. Second, its role as a gathering point for readers: the Friday story time has been led for more than two decades by the same reader, and the shop regularly brings authors to San Antonio and partners with schools on book fairs. Third, the setting: the store sits inside the Pearl, the former Pearl Brewery complex, along the Museum Reach of the River Walk, so a visit fits naturally into an afternoon on the river. The shop's long-serving manager, Claudia Maceo Sharp, has been a fixture at the store for decades and is a large part of why it still feels like a neighborhood bookstore.

Why I publish this

Local businesses shape what daily life feels like in a community, and an independent bookstore that has survived more than 50 years says something real about the people it serves: enough foot traffic, enough readers, and enough community support to keep the lights on. That matters to me because I help buyers settle into San Antonio neighborhoods, and the strength of a local business district is one of the practical things a buyer can check for themselves. If you are weighing parts of the city, my San Antonio community guide and the Alamo Heights community guide, where the shop spent many of its Broadway years, go deeper into what daily life is like in each area.

When you find the area that fits, I can help with the rest.
